陽炎（かげろう）とは、夏の陽射しに揺らめく熱気のこと。手を伸ばせば消えてしまう、その儚い美しさを作品名に込めました。
本作は、日本の民話「狐の嫁入り」から着想を得たチェスセットです。晴れた空に雨が降るとき、狐たちが幻想の婚礼をあげる——そんな神秘的な情景を盤上に映し出します。
日本の伝承で狐は、神仏の使いであり精霊でもある存在。人と異界を行き来するその姿を、駒一つひとつの造形に重ねました。
遊戯にとどまらず、手に取る詩として。陽炎のように、一瞬の美を盤上にとどめます。

KAGERō Chess Set
■ Inspiration
Kagerō refers to the shimmering heat that wavers under the summer sun—an ephemeral beauty that vanishes when you reach out to touch it. This fleeting quality inspired the name of the work.
This chess set is inspired by the Japanese folktale Kitsune no Yomeiri (“The Fox Wedding”). It depicts a mysterious scene where foxes hold a wedding ceremony when rain falls from a clear sky—a vision from a world of illusions, brought to life on the chessboard.
In Japanese folklore, the fox is a sacred and mystical being, a messenger of the gods who moves between the human world and the spirit realm. Each piece in this set embodies that duality—creatures who traverse both worlds.
More than a game, this is poetry you can hold. Like kagerō, it captures permanence from momentary beauty.

仕上げと制作技法について
本チェスセットの駒と盤面には、上質な漆塗り仕上げが施されています。駒の原型は、WABISAの職人が日本の伝統的な彫刻技法を用い、一つひとつ丁寧に手彫りしたものを、金属鋳造によって量産したものです。盤面と駒の両方に、手作業で漆を塗り重ね、さらに金箔を繊細に施すことで、深みと輝きを兼ね備えた質感を生み出しています。漆、金属、金箔が織りなす調和が、日本工芸の洗練された美意識を体現しています。
On Finishing and Craftsmanship
The pieces and board of this chess set are finished with high-quality urushi lacquer.
Each original piece was meticulously hand-carved by WABISA artisans using traditional Japanese sculpting techniques, then reproduced through metal casting.
Both the board and the pieces are carefully layered with hand-applied lacquer and delicately adorned with gold leaf, creating a rich texture that combines depth and radiance.
The harmony of lacquer, metal, and gold leaf reflects the refined aesthetics of Japanese craftsmanship.

2. 盤面デザインを選ぶ
盤面は、光と影が織りなす2種類のデザインからお選びいただけます。どちらも透明感のあるガラスの上に漆を重ね、金粉や螺鈿のきらめきを閉じ込めた華やかな仕上げ。角度や光の加減によって、異なる表情を見せます。
A.「星影（ほしかげ）」 —
伝統文様〈麻の葉〉を基調とした端正なデザイン。
星の光のように繊細な金線が盤上に浮かび、静かな夜空を思わせる幻想的な輝きを放ちます。
B.「花影（はなかげ）」 —
「星影」をもとに、一部のマスに日本の草花の絵柄をあしらったアレンジ。花や葉のモチーフがそよ風に揺れるように浮かび上がり、幾何学の中に自然のリズムとやさしさを映し出します。

和歌山・黒江の漆文化
駒と盤の漆仕上げは、和歌山県海南市黒江に拠点を置く漆芸職人・藤井嘉彦（ふじい・よしひこ）によって施されています。藤井氏は「塗り工房ふじい」を2001年に設立し、漆塗りの魅力を現代の暮らしへと広める活動を行っています。黒江は、400年以上の歴史を持つ漆器の産地であり、山中塗・会津塗と並ぶ日本三大漆器産地のひとつ。温暖で海に面した気候が漆の硬化に適しており、漆器産業が栄えてきました。川端通り周辺には、ノコギリの歯のように連なる職人の住居兼作業場が今も残り、漆のまちならではの風景が広がっています。
Lacquer Tradition in Kuroe, Wakayama
The lacquer finishing on both the pieces and board is carried out by master artisan Fujii Yoshihiko, based in Kuroe, Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture. Fujii founded Nurikoubou Fujii in 2001 with the vision of bringing lacquer art into contemporary life. Kuroe is one of Japan’s three major lacquerware production areas, alongside Yamanaka and Aizu, with a history of over 400 years. Its warm, coastal climate is ideal for lacquer curing, and the region has long flourished as a center of the lacquer industry. Even today, the Kawabata-dōri area retains its distinctive landscape, with rows of craftspeople’s workshops and homes lined up like saw teeth—an enduring scene from a town built on lacquer.

Fujii Yoshihiko
黒江生まれ。家業の漆器業の修行のため、単身で中東、アメリカ、ヨーロッパを見聞し、漆器製品の輸出や百貨店での展示などを手掛ける。帰国後、漆塗りの技法をインテリアに取り入れたいと2001年「塗り工房ふじい」を設立。独自でガラスへの漆の定着化に成功し、世界初の漆塗り洋食器を開発、デザイン、製造、プロデュースしている。
Born in Kuroe, Fujii Yoshihiko trained in his family’s lacquerware craft and traveled through the Middle East, the U.S., and Europe to gain experience in exports and exhibitions. Returning to Japan, he founded Nurikoubou Fujii in 2001 to fuse traditional lacquer techniques with modern design. He later pioneered a method to apply lacquer to glass and created the world’s first Western-style lacquerware tableware.
